The Somnus Sleep Shirt by Nyx Devices is the latest in high-tech devices designed to measure the quality of your sleep. This clever shirt has sensors embedded into the fabric which enables it to measure and record your breathing patterns.

Normally if you if you wanted to know if you had a sleep disorder you would visit a clinic be wired to multiple sensors which would monitor your brain activity, eye movements, your muscle activity and your breathing not only is this expensive but also very inconvenient.

This new shirt would enable people to monitor their sleeping patterns and give them an indication as to not only how long they were sleeping for but also the quality of their sleep.

Although the idea of diagnosing sleep disorders by using breathing alone is still considered experimental this shirt could be the first stage in discovering whether you have a sleep problem without the usual inconvienience. Many people with insomnia under estimate how much sleep they are actually getting during the night and the device like this could help determine the severity of this problem among others.

This device is currently being tested alongside traditional methods of determining sleep problems and it is believed that it might go on sale before the end of this year and its estimated its cost will be under $100 putting it within the reach of most people.

Being someone who likes gadgets at that price I may well buy one for myself. It’s always interesting to determine how much sleep you actually get during the night and to be able to correlate it with things like drinking, eating late at night and other factors to see if they effect the quality of my sleep.

It looks like Facebook can cause people to have sleeping problems.

Not only does looking out computer monitors late at night effect the quality of your sleep but it looks like people are being disturbed while sleeping.

Apparently people are being woken in the middle of the night by alerts on their mobile phone from Facebook. It is well known that having your sleep interrupted can leave you tired and unrefreshed in the morning.

What I can’t get my head around is who and why would people allow themselves to be disturbed by messages on Facebook in the middle of the night? What can be so important about their social life that it can’t wait until the morning?

For me this is very puzzling behaviour I know I’m a bit of a dinosaur at over 50 years old but I am technically savvy. I’ve worked in Information Technology for over 25 years and I love my gadgets. I have a Facebook account multiple Twitter accounts and I use social media as much as the next person.

But I draw the line to being disturbed while I sleep. My mobile phone is switched off when I go to bed and it isn’t the first thing that I switch on in the morning. Being social is obviously a good thing but when it starts to take over your life and affects your normal daily activities it’s something that needs to be looked at.

In my day if I wanted to socialise I got off my butt and would go out for a meal with my friends or go for a few drinks at my local bar. It looks like the days of meeting people face-to-face have almost passed when many would prefer to sit in front of the computer and socialise than go out.

How sad is that?

Bottom line is turn off your computer a couple of hours before going to bed and remember to switch off your mobile phone nothing is so important that it won’t wait until the morning

I think the question how many hours sleep do you really need is a very interesting one. It’s been touted for many years that eight hours is ideal and that anything less than this can lead you un-rested and therefore unable to perform your day time duties optimally.

A new study from the sleep laboratory at the hospital University of Pennsylvania would tend to verify this fact. They split a group of students into three groups the first group getting eight hours sleep a night the second six hours and the third for hours.

They were then tested during the day and no surprises here the group that got eight hours sleep had no cognitive decline. The group that was getting six hours sleep did a little worse and the third group did the worst not rocket science.

From this data they deduced that anything less than eight hours sleep a night caused some decline in cognitive ability. But this could be slightly misleading. I used to work shifts when I was serving in the Merchant Marine some of which could be brutal.

Five hours on and five hours off meant that if you were to perform your duties adequately you would probably only get three to four hours continuous sleep and a maximum of six hours in any 24-hour period.

So not only was I getting less than eight hours sleep a day but my sleep pattern would be interupted as the shift forced me to sleep at different times during the day due to the five hours on and five hours off working pattern.

So was my cognitive ability compromised? I would have to say probably but I believe your mind and body adjusts to whatever sleeping patterns you throw at it and so long as they are not permanent changes your mind learns to cope and no permanent damage is done.

As a navigator it was obviously important for the safety of the ship and all the crew members that my cognitive ability wasn’t impaired and for the most part I believe it wasn’t.

Studies in laboratories are a good source of baseline data but in the real world I believe things are often not as simple or as straightforward.

So although in theory getting less than eight hours sleep isn’t optimal in practice the line between getting enough sleep and getting too little gets blurred in the real world.

It has been designed to ensure you always sleep on your side and therefore can help prevent you rolling onto your back which is a well known reason for many peoples snoring problem.

It is said to:

improve your sleeping posture

Give you a great nights sleep

Help you wake up refreshed and with less stiffness

Relieves pressure on the neck

Developed by a Chiropractor

This pillow is an interesting idea that might actually work for some people although I’d imagine it would take some getting used to. At $19.99 + S&H it’s reasonably priced and although as an anti snoring aid it’s effectiveness would be limited as with all things it might just work for you.

As I’ve said before it’s always worth trying the simple, inexpensive and non invasive Snoring Cures first before moving on to the more expensive snoring aids.

According to the sales page this item isn’t available in stores but if you’re uncomfortable purchasing on-line if other products are anything to go by give it three or four months and you’ll find them everywhere.

If however you can’t wait and would like to see a video of the Snoreben in action click here.

Getting a full night of rested sleep is important for the proper functioning of our body. Many people wouldn’t need a Snoring Cure if they could just learn to drop off quickly and sleep deeply.

One reason many people can’t get to sleep or stay asleep is that they complain of having a busy mind. They find it difficult to stop their minds hopping from one thing to another worrying about what might happen, how they’re going to pay the bills and all the other 101 things they have to do or haven’t yet done. So much is going on in there minds that they just can’t sleep.

One method which works for many people involves discharging all the energy in these types of thought so that the mind can let them go which in turn lets you sleep.

What you do is:

Get into bed and make yourself comfortable

Close your eyes and take a couple of slow breaths in and out

In your mind imagine running through your day again but backwards!

Start from you just getting into bed then walking to bed then what you did in the evening all the way back to getting up in the morning

Take your time there’s no hurry and linger anywhere it seems right to spend a little more time. The chances are you’ll not get to the beginning of the day before you fall asleep. This technique works because it forces closure (you’re examining all that happened that day) and therefore takes any stress that might have been buzzing around in your mind away.

Remove the stress and your mind will relax enabling you to sleep and more importantly stay asleep all night. You’ll wake rested and ready fo a new day.

It sounds at bit strange but it’s super easy and works like gang busters so why not give it a go tonight? All you’ve got to lose is a sleepless night

Be glad you don’t live in Ireland as it’s estimated two thirds of people living there suffer from insomnia. Now that’s a lot of people and the major causes are thought to be stress and money worries.

Over sixty percent does seem a bit on the high side and I’m wondering if for insomnia we should read having difficulty in getting to sleep. It appears that many people have forgotten how to relax these days and are allowing lets face it fairly normal events to disturb their slumber.

When we consider that stress is one of major causes of death in any population the sleeping problems are just the icing on the cake. Learning to relax and therefore reducing stress levels is therefore very important and lets face it fairly easily taught.

The problem is that most employers / health agencies focus on stress management and not stress reduction. It’s a waste of time managing stress as it doesn’t actually help to reduce stress levels at all in fact all it does is give the person receiving the advice a false sense of security.

With money worries, job worries and family problems in the short term stress levels are just going to increase year on year and what we really need to do is learn how to actively reduce any stress we may be picking up in our normal daily activities.

Plenty of books are available that can teach you how to relax from Pilates, Self Hypnosis, Tai Chi and exercise.

So don’t leave it to late learn how to relax today.

Along with the usual culprits that prevent you getting a good nights sleep like caffeine, alcohol and rich foods before bedtime research has discovered another unusual cause.

It was discovered that those using devices that Emmit a lot of light just before or leading up to bed time don’t sleep as well as those who avoid them for a couple of hours before sleeping.

If you think about it we have a lot of devices in our homes that emmitt a lot of light and they include:

TV’s particularly those in our bedroom

Computer and Laptop monitors

Iphones and other mobile devices

It’s not entirely clear why this should be but some likely reasons are:

Mental stimulation just before sleeping by being on-line and communicating with family and friends via Email, Facebook and instant messaging

The light emitted from many electronic devices fools the brain into thinking it’s earlier than it actually is

Being disturbed in the middle of the night by cellphones and SMS messages

The message is avoid electronic devices at least one hour before going to bed and if possible stop watching TV within the same time period.

For myself I’ve always managed to tear myself away from the computer (I switch it off) many hours before bed time. Maybe that’s why I sleep so well

I knew if I waited long enough research would confirm that dozing off throughout the day is beneficial and the next time my boss catches me having forty winks I’ll have more ammunition than my old power napping story!

Research has proved that a 40 minute nap during the day can help relieve stress which lowers blood pressure and in turn protects the heart.

This study although small at 80 people allowed 40 to nap for an hour during the day and the other control group sadly were denied the nap. At the end of the hour both groups were stressed by making them perform a test. At the end of the test it was discovered that the napping group had significantly lower blood pressure than there non napping counterparts.

We should have figured this out earlier as all you have to do is look at the Europeans Greece in particular. Considering they drink and smoke more than the rest of the world it always struck me as odd just how long lived they were. Some point to the diet and an outdoor lifestyle but what a lot of people have forgotten is that they nap for an hour at the hottest time of the day.

Maybe we should take a leaf out of there book my only concern is how on earth am I going to persuade my boss that kipping for an hour in the middle of the day is going to increase his bottom line

Another reason that sleep deprivation isn’t good for you has been discovered by researchers into sleep and sleeping problems. Although most of us would shy away from gambling anyway it’s been discovered that gambling in the wee hours of the morning when we’re sleep deprived makes us think that we’re more likely to win.

The researchers aren’t entirely sure why that should happen but I have a theory I don’t suppose it could have anything to do with the amount of alcohol they’ve consumed do you? Never mind the sleep deprivation it’s the drinking people should be more concerned about.

That’s the problem with research there are so many variables to be taken into account that it’s easy to draw the wrong conclusions particularly when it comes to subjective things “Feeling Lucky”. How do you measure it?

I’m not saying the research is flawed it’s just that we need to be careful we don’t place to much credence in this type of discovery.

In other words if it looks like a duck, smells like a duck and swims like a duck it’s probably a duck not a cat

Two new studies have shown that over a third of us don’t get at least 7 hours of uninterrupted sleep a night. These studies were large with over 70,000 people surveyed in 2009.

The study highlighted four potentially serious sleep patterns which included

Lack of sleep (not enough)

The dreaded snoring

Falling asleep during the day

Most worrying falling asleep (nodding off) while driving

A massive 47% reported snoring and 5% fell asleep at the wheel When I think of the problems associated with lack of sleep falling asleep at the wheel has to be the most lethal particularly if you’re a truck driver.

We all know that getting a good nights sleep is essential and this report highlights a trend that is getting worse year on year. Some have attributed it to the increased ammount of stress the general population suffers these days from a shortage of money to longer working hours it looks like this problem is not going away.

Many sleep related disorders go away on there own but if you have persistent difficulties getting a good nights rest it’s strongly suggested you see a Physician as it could be an indicator of a more serious health problem like Sleep Apnea.
