Another Weight Loss Drug Which Can Combat Sleep Apnea

Here’s another medical development that may help people trying to combat Sleep Apnea and lose weight. The California-based company Vivus inc have been trialling an obesity drug called Qnexa, which has shown to lower blood pressure levels during sleep, increase weight loss over those trial subjects who were only given a placebo. There was also a reported 69% decrease in incidences of Sleep Apnea.

The trial involved 45 men and women, who were all between the ages of 30 and 65. It was a 28-week trial, which entailed a one-a-day dose of either a Placebo or Qnexa. It was also accompanied by what the authors of the study termed a programme of “Lifestyle Modification.”

This, of course, is the key to all weight loss, or the treatment of Sleep Apnea- you shouldn’t trust any product which claims to entirely cure the condition, or to render any effort on the subject’s part redundant.

Still, Vivus’ results are pretty impressive. They state that the patients who took Qnexa in the study ended up losing an average 10.2 percent of their body weight in 28 weeks. This equated to a total of 24 pounds. By comparison, the subjects who were given the placebo lost 4.3% of their body weight, which is about 11 pounds.

Both results are positive steps, and it shows that you can get quite some way to a addressing a problem by simply changing your lifestyle. However, it also seems true that sometimes a medical aid will help you get where you want to go, and help make snoring a thing of the past.

Qnexa is currently being submitted to the FDA for approval.
