Sleep Apnea Linked With Falling Out Of Bed!

by tom on January 2, 2010

We came across a question on an agony aunt’s page a while back, from a man whose wife fell out of bed a lot, and who was worried she was trying to get away from him! Whilst this can sound funny, it probably isn’t for this poor man, or his wife!

If I was being facetious, I’d say that maybe he had a snoring issue that she was trying to get away from, but I don’t think that’s likely to be the case. It’s far more probable that this woman actually has some kind of sleep disorder herself. If she (or someone like her) is falling out of bed a lot, then this may be a sign that they are moving a lot in their sleep. That can be because they’re sleeping in an unnatural or uncomfortable way, which is what can cause the sporadic restriction of the airways which causes snoring, or the complete blockages which are sleep apnea, and can cause dangerous reductions in the blood’s oxygen level.

We’re not completely static when we sleep- we toss and turn, we move about trying to get comfortable- we’re just unaware of it. In most people, this is entirely natural, but if someone’s moving about enough to be in danger of falling out of bed, then this is clearly a sign of problems that need to be addressed. It’s a sign that your body is having to take drastic measures.

This is a good example of situations where supposedly small issues like snoring can be signifiers of bigger problems. It’s a warning signal that something is wrong, and if you or your partner are making these warning signals, it’s going to be worth getting it checked out.
