Sleep Apnea causes all sorts of worrying symptoms, of which snoring can be the least serious. Sufferers can wake up feeling breathless, struggling for air. They can be exhausted during the day, the result of not getting proper sleep.
Now, it seems that there has been a large increase in such cases, and a lot of the time it can be the product of a person’s lifestyle.
Doctor Kailash Sant, a consultant Ear Nose and Throat surgeon, notes that Sleep Apnea ‘is increasingly becoming a lifestyle disorder due to lifestyle changes.”
People whose sleep pattern is irregular, and who are overweight are particularly at risk, Dr Sant notes. We’re all familiar with the causes of obesity- it’s a sedentary lifestyle, poor diet choices and not getting enough exercise. The modern world doesn’t make it easy, sure, but if we have a problem, part of the blame has to fall on ourselves.
That can be seen one of two ways. In one way, it’s something of an indictment of the lives we lead, which are heaping more and more avoidable health problems on us. In another sense, it’s heartening as we know we are able to do something about it.
As Dr Sant points out, “Thanks to more education now and the Internet, more people are becoming aware of it.” You’re welcome, Doctor Sant!
There are snoring solutions out there, and whilst not every snorer has Sleep Apnea, it can be a symptom, and given that the condition can have such serious consequences, it’s really not something anyone should ignore. Think of it this way- at the least, you’re doing something about your snoring, losing weight and being more healthy in general. At the very least, fixing that will give your partner more sleep. It could be the first step in solving a wider problem, and improving your quality of life.
After all, excessive sleepiness in one’s daily life is going to have a number of knock-on effects. It can effect our ability to do our job, and in our social lives. No-one wants to go through life feeling like the walking dead.
The solutions are there. The onus is on ourselves to grasp them.
