Snoring, although not often talked about seriously, and very often laughed about, can have very serious side effects and consequences. Apart from keeping the non-snoring partner awake and in danger of becoming a murderer, or at least an abuser, snoring can be an indication of underlying health problems.
There are numerous cures and remedies, some of which are very effective, which can be bought over the counter but if these fail, the only recourse is to seek medical help and sometimes surgery is recommended.
One of the main causes of snoring is the vibration of the soft palate and the use of a radio frequency can be very effective in tightening the muscle within the soft palate, thus reducing the vibration and eliminating snoring. The procedure is becoming very popular. It only takes a very short time and involves numbing the back of the throat, targeting the area with a pen-like instrument, which emits a high frequency; the heat causing the muscle to tighten up over a period of weeks.
Another procedure, which is said to be effective, is the insertion of implants into the soft palate. The procedure is usually performed under local anaesthetic and involves the implant being inserted through a hollow needle into the soft palate close to the junction with the hard palate and reaching into the muscular layer. The needle is withdrawn leaving the implant in position. Two or three implants are usually inserted during the procedure. The soft palate becomes harder and vibrations lessen, thus reducing and often eliminating snoring.
A blocked nose is a very common cause for snoring. Again, there are various remedies and surgery is only recommended if these fail. A deviated septum may have to be corrected; sometimes the cause of the problem is enlarged fleshy ‘ridges’ at the entrance of the sinuses. Laser treatment carried out under local anaesthetic can be used and usually the problem is removed in minutes, a fully working airway is restored and there is no bleeding.
