Snoring An Instrument Of The Devil!

by Carol Bartram on June 22, 2009

Stop SnoringSnoring, I think must be an instrument of the devil, since it can ruin our lives!  It appears that around 69% of us snore at some time in our lives. A loud snorer can reach 90 decibels – about the same amount of noise as that made by a passing train!

Snoring must be one of the biggest strains on marriage (apart from adultery!) and if you sleep with the snorer, your life, and especially your nightlife, can be hell, especially when the snorer refuses to believe that he/she is the culprit.

I am sure that listening to a snorer is one of the most distressing and annoying sounds you can be subjected to – especially after a busy day and after spending the evening looking forward to getting into your comfortable bed and falling into blissful sleep, only to be awoken by those ear shattering, bed shaking snorts emanating from the love of your life who is blissfully unaware of just how close he (and it’s usually ‘he’) is to meeting an untimely demise by having a pillow pressed over his face until the dreadful noise stops!

The snorer of course very often knows nothing about the misery his sleeping partner has been through and wakes in the morning full of the joys of spring, ready to face a new day, only to be met by a tirade of abuse from a very disgruntled, bad tempered, sleep deprived partner who, after a sleepless night has to face another busy day.  This is not a recipe for contented living!

So what’s to be done?  Well, since a lot of snorers sleep on their backs, thus allowing the tongue to block the throat, you can dig him in the ribs and try to make him turn onto his side in the hope that this might stop him.  Sometimes nothing will stop the noise and there is no way the snorer can be silenced and while his partner does everything possible to block out the sound very often the only remedy is to take yourself off to another room.

There are many snoring cures which are available to buy ‘over the counter’ and which may be effective but snoring can also be caused by a medical condition which many of these treatments may camouflage, so it might be wise to consult a doctor before trying any of these snoring remedies.

Normally snoring is caused by a blockage in the breathing passage, maybe as the result of a cold and in a case like this the condition is only temporary.  In overweight people the fat presses on the throat, causing a narrowing of the breathing passages; smoking weakens and clogs the throat and drinking alcohol is also a major cause of snoring.
