Snoring is a difficult thing to deal with- whilst it may just be a minor nuisance, it can also be the source of real distress, and a cumulative loss of sleep for a partner which can cause so many problems over time. With that in mind, it’s no wonder that people are willing to try all sorts of unusual home remedies, or improvised methods to try and deal with the problem. Here’s a run-down on a few of them, and the pros and cons of them all.

One popular one is the pillow placed underneath the snorer, which stops them from rolling onto their back. This can help the sleeper by keeping them on their side, but it can also reduce the quality of the sleep, by making them uncomfortable. For those who try this approach and find it doesn’t work, there is also the practise of sewing a tennis ball into a pocket in one’s night clothes. This is virtually impossible to sleep on, and very effective indeed.

Another option is using essential oils. These are intended to help with breathing, and snoring is at its base a problem of the breathing passages. A small dose of something like eucalyptus either placed in an oil burner, sprinkled on a pillow or placed sparingly under the nose has been shown to help some people. If nothing else, it’s certainly a good way to make one’s sleeping environment a pleasant place, which is actually a vital part of getting a good night’s sleep.

Another option is the herbal sleep pillow, which is simply a normal pillow with a built-in sachet which holds aromatic herbs (typically lavender, hops or marjoram) and can surround you with a relaxing aroma as you go to sleep, and sooth inflammation of the . Another hot tip in terms of herbal remedies is products from lime trees, particularly the flowers. A small amount of dried lime flowers slipped into the pillow is said to be a very effective thing.

Of course, there is still considerable debate about whether these kinds of remedies can actually make a difference, or whether something like placebo effect is at play. One thing which can be said, however, and which we’ve already touched on, is that the act of making your sleeping area a more pleasant place to be in, through adding something like a pleasant smelling herb or oil, is always going to be beneficial. This won’t necessarily cure your snoring, but it will make going to sleep at night a slightly more luxurious and pleasant experience.

There are a lot of different snoring aids out there on the market, and each different type is effective in its own way. Not every product is effective, of course, and some are better made than others, but by and large there’s a lot of good anti-snoring aids available to the snoring sufferer. It’s a common experience, however, that someone will buy a proven anti-snoring aid or try a widely recommended method, only to find that it just doesn’t work for them.

Is this because there’s some people can’t be helped? Not at all. It’s because some people aren’t trying the anti-snoring aid which works for them. Everyone is different, and whilst snoring is fairly well understood and easily alleviated, the reasons and ways a person can snore are different, and each product will achieve different things. Here, then, is an overview of the different kinds of anti-snoring aid which we can use, and what each one can do for us.

The anti-snoring pillow: it is for the person who sleeps with their head at an unusual angle, causing a constriction in the breathing passages. It holds the head up comfortably, in a position where they can breath without obstruction.

Nasal strips: these tapes go over the nose and keep the airways open, letting you breathe more easily through the nose and keeping air flow away from the soft tissues of the mouth. This can also help if you have quite narrow nasal passages, or tend to ‘whistle’ through the nose as you sleep.

The anti-snoring chin strap: this stops the jaw from lolling and hanging open, pressurising the throat. If you are a ‘slack-jawed’ snorer (often one of the loudest kinds!) then this will hold the jaw in a more natural and comfortable position even when all the muscles of the throat are relaxed.

There are others, such as adjustable beds, sprays, and even hypnotic devices. These first three, however, are the most widely used and generally effective anti-snoring treatments out there.

If you go looking on the internet for cures for snoring, you’ll find all kinds of products advertised. Chin straps, jaw supporters, homeopathic infusions, shaped pillows, medication, nose strips, laser surgery, nose plugs, and god knows what else. Some of these products work. Others, well, let’s just say the jury’s out and that some people feel like they’re helped by them.

How can you tell one from the other? It’s very easy to look a website for a product, any product, and be impressed with what you see. There’s an art to making something look good, but that’s an art that a lot of people know these days. How do you tell the people who are the real deal from the shysters?

Here’s a good first hint.

Is the product you’re looking at being touted as a ‘cure’ for snoring?

Yes? then be suspicious.

I guess this might be a confusing answer. Surely that’s what every snoring aid is for, you might think? To cure the problem?

Well, yes and no. The thing is, you see, it’s not possible to eradicate snoring entirely. Can’t be done. As long as air is passing through those soft tubes in our nose, mouth and throat, it can make the soft tissues of the body vibrate, and produce a snoring sound now and then. It’s just a fact of life. I’ll say it again; you cannot cure snoring.

Of course, some people want to say they that. It’s obvious why- competition. Everyone wants to promise more than their competitors.

We’re not going to pull the wool over your eyes. We’ll try to be honest. So, given that you can’t cure snoring, the good news is that you can reduce it. Stop it from being constant, turn the volume down to acceptable levels, and turns something from a constant problem into an occasional irrelevance.

Now that, we can promise.

We’re very careful here at Sleepandsnoringaids.com to only recommend products and treatments which actually make a difference. We believe that it’s the only honest way to do business. There are some people out there, however, who will do anything it seems to make a fast buck.

An Australian company has recently been rapped on the knuckles by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) for making unsubstantiated claims about an ‘anti-snore’ ring which was supposed to have a therapeutic benefit in the treatment of chronic snoring. The company, who we won’t name here, claimed that this ring had been scientifically proven to reduce anxiety, producing a ‘calming effect’ which helps the wearer to sleep, and stops them from snoring.

It was supposed to work by means of a series of pressure balls which pressed on the little finger and helped the wearer to relax. According to this company’s website, the ring had “a proven history of successful drug-free treatment of snoring.” What’s more, it had been “tested and reccommended by a physician.”

You’ll notice that they didn’t mention that physician’s name, of course. That’s because they didn’t have one.

Here’s a physician’s name for you- Ron Grunstein, he’s a physician. He’s also a Professor of Sleep Medicine at the Woolcock Institute at Sydney University. Here’s his profile on that university’s website.

He’s on record as saying that there are a lot of people out there who are wasting a lot of money on unproven treatments, telling the Sydney Morning Herald that “no matter how much advice [we give] about these treatments having very little effect, people still get ripped off,”. He’s also in favour of restricting the snoring aids that are sold by pharmacies.

So are we, for that matter. We don’t want stuff like this out there for people to waste their money on. As I said at the outset of this article, we believe in the effectiveness of the products we provide. To hear about people being sold things like this magical snore-reducing ring disappoints us because we know we’ve got the good stuff right here, and we know it actually works.

When you’re looking for a snoring aid, make sure you pick something that actually works!

A lot of snoring aids promise to be the ‘cure’ for snoring, but that isn’t always the truth. Sometimes that’s not really a realistic goal.

Don’t despair, though- it’s always possible to at least reduce snoring. An interesting new treatment being developed has something in common with the Apex system in so much as it relies upon implants into the body. This is a little simpler, though- this is a simple plastic strip, inserted into the soft tissues of the pallet. The reason this works, is that snoring is often a vibration of this tissue, which happens when the airways become congested. Air pressure through the mouth during breathing increases and the soft tissues vibrate, acting like a rather tuneless version of the reed in a wind instrument (and producing a slightly less than musical sound!)

Obviously, this blockage can increase and become Sleep Apnea. In that situation, these proposed strips won’t help directly, and won’t do anything to prevent the further problems that can develop as a result of Sleep Apnea.

Not every snorer suffers from this, however. Most of the time, a snorer is maybe suffering a slight disturbance to their sleep and experience increased sleepiness during the day. I think we all know who suffers most, though! It’s the partners, kept awake by these sounds, who are the real sufferers.

With that in mind, check this result out: a test of this procedure on 12 people used ratings of the snorer’s loudness by their spouses themselves. The long-suffering partners were asked to rate their partner’s loudness out of 100. At the start of the study, the average rating was 79. Rather impressively, some of these snorers were rated as ‘loud enough to be heard outside the house! Three months later, partners reported an average of rating of 48!

If you’ve suffered sleepless nights as a result of a partner’s snoring, then I’m pretty sure your heart just leapt!

Whilst it can seem funny or trivial, a partner’s snoring can cause all kinds of problems, both embarrassing and damaging to a relationship. If that’s a situation you’re in, maybe this surgical solution could be the answer.

For those of us who don’t want to go under the knife just yet, there’s still a lot of other options available. Maybe it’s time to try one of them, before things get out of hand!

Snoring is often considered to be nothing more than an annoyance. It’s laughed off. No big issue, nothing serious.

Right?

Maybe not. A growing medical consensus is starting to form, suggesting that snoring is a symptom of a serious condition which can pose a serious threats to a person’s health.

I’m referring to Obstructive Sleep Apnea. It’s the cessation of breathing due to a blockage in the airway, which occurs in sufferers hundreds of times over a night’s sleep. This can ruin a night of sleep.

As a result, sufferers can then develop symptoms such as sleepiness, depression, issues with memory, and a number of cardiac conditions. These can often be attributed incorrectly to other causes.

Here’s a stat for you; according to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine there are an estimated 20 Million Americans currently suffering from Obstructive Sleep Apnea, 90 percent of whom are undiagnosed. It’s serious enough that Dr. William Dement, the director of the Stanford Sleep Disorders and Research Center has called sleep disorders “arguably the number one health problem in the United States.”

Another stat; according to a survey carried out by the Sleep and Breathing Journal, 75 percent of physicians do not screen for OSA.

So many people are suffering because of undiagnosed OSA. What’s more, Obesity is a related risk factor. If you’re a man with a neck size of 17 inches plus, or a woman with a neck size of 15 inches plus, you are at risk.

We don’t want to be alarmist, about this, but there was a recent Yale study which concluded that a 5-year period of untreated OSA makes you 30 percent more likely to suffer a premature death.

The worst thing is that it doesn’t have to be this way. Diagnosis is easy, and simple cures like Mandibular Advancement Devices can be used to keep the airways clear as you sleep, which can alleviate all but the most severe cases of OSA.

So if you or someone you know has some of the symptoms mentioned in this article, don’t you owe it yourself, or to them, to take it seriously?

Most people would agree that living with a snorer can be a living hell but trust me there’s snoring and then there’s SNORING. Recently an English women has had her snoring recorded as one of the highest (noisiest) in the UK.

When you consider that a chain saw will register at about 110 decibels this unfortunate woman’s snoring has been recorded at … wait for it … 112 decibels! Louder than a speeding locomotive, jet plane, power saw and even a garbage disposal truck.

Has this woman never heard of Snoring Aids! I feel great pity for her partner as snoring that loud has got to be disruptive to anyone in the near vicinity. I think this would be a case for seperate bedrooms (preferably in a different house) rather than seperate beds. At this level it’s unlikely you could find respite anywhere in the same house.

Joking aside snoring can be a curse and could even be a sign of an undiagnosed medical condition. So if you’re snoring and keeping your partner awake at night you may want to pay your health professional a visit. If that doesn’t work there is no shortage of anti snoring treatments available and usually as long as no underlying medical condition exists there will be a treatment that works for you it may just take a bit of research and trial and error.

An interesting new way to detect people who suffer from Sleep Apnea has been developed by Remote Analysis Ltd. Using of all things an Iphone it is claimed that by analysing the sounds you make while you sleep can predict whether you suffer from or will suffer from sleep apnea.

This Iphone application is inexpensive and very easy to use. You place the Iphone near where you sleep on a night stand for example. Hit the record button and go to sleep as normal. In the morning stop the recording and use the application to analyse the noises you made in the night.

The system shows you a graph showing of when you actually snored during the night and you can listen to the clips and compare them to samples provided of people who actually have sleep apnea.

So what’s so special about this after all it doesn’t stop you snoring does it? Well no it doesn’t but with sleep apnea being a condition that its best to know about (it can cause some serious health problems) a heads up to ensure you go and see your doctor is a good thing.

It can also be used by a snorers partner to prove to the guilty party that they actually do snore loudly at night and that they may want to look at Effective Sleeping Aids to help them stop snoring.

I’ve heard it all now honestly I think I have. I’ve been writing about the Best Snoring Aids and treatments for a long time but exercising your tongue how on earth are you going to manage that! I know I’ll get all the funny “Well if you met my wife you’d know how” quips but joking aside a researcher has discovered anecdotal evidence that exercising your tongue could be an answer.

This doctor has looked at the tongues of many patients as they’ve gained weight and contends that as they gain weight they also get fatter tongues. As fatter tongues take up more space they have an increased tendency to fall backwards obstructing the airway and therefore increasing the likelihood of a person snoring.

I suppose like any part of the body the more untoned it is the more it’s going to wobble and move. And like any muscle if we exercise it it’s going to firm up.

He prescribes voice exercises to help tone the tongue and funny as it might sound has had some good results from this simple and easy to do stop snoring method.

So if you hear anyone making strange noises like a bird don’t assume they’re completely bonkers they might be exercising their tongue!

I love this story according to the researchers eliminating snoring could improve your handicap by a massive three strokes. Now which golf player wouldn’t want that! In fact a lot of platers will be wishing they snored so they to could get the improvement.

The researchers followed twelve golfers who suffered from sleep apnoea which causes them to stop breathing for a time while they sleep. This interruption in their sleeping patterns can leave them waking up tired and irritable. To help them sleep better they were given a mask to wear which forces oxygen into the lungs helping them to not stop breathing during the night.

It was noted that after some weeks of treatment their golf improved. Now I’m not a scientist but I thought this would be obvious. If someone gets a great nights sleep and is refreshed and relaxed upon awaking I would expect all aspects of their life to improve not just golf!

The moral of the story is get a greats nights sleep and your life will improve. If you snore or suffer from sleep apnoea go see your health professional you never know treatments and Snoring Aids have come a long way from the old methods of a quick jab in the back!
